Discover more about Pandino castle

The Visconti Castle of Pandino, located in the heart of the town of Pandino in the province of Cremona, stands as a remarkable example of 14th-century Lombard architecture. Constructed between 1355 and 1361 by Bernabò Visconti, Lord of Milan, and his wife, Beatrice Regina della Scala, the castle served as both a residence and a strategic stronghold. Visconti, an avid hunting enthusiast, chose Pandino as the site for his castle, taking advantage of the area's abundant woodlands and game. The castle's design reflects the typical Visconti lowland castle style: a square plan with four square corner towers. The outer sides of the castle measure 66 meters, and the towers reach a height of 30 meters. An internal courtyard features a ground-floor portico with pointed arches and an upper-level loggia with simple columns. Originally, a moat encircled the castle, adding to its defensive capabilities. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several changes in ownership and use. In the 15th century, the Sforza family replaced the Visconti, adding defensive structures, including two towers, to the entrances. Later, the castle fell into disrepair and was used for agricultural purposes until the municipality of Pandino purchased it in 1947 and began restoration efforts. Today, Pandino Castle is home to municipal offices, a library, and a police post. The interior retains its frescoed decorations, including geometric motifs and the coats of arms of the Visconti and Della Scala families. Visitors can explore the courtyard and, by appointment, view the interior. The castle also hosts various events, including the annual "Panda in Pandino" festival for Fiat Panda enthusiasts.
