The Colleoni Chapel, or Cappella Colleoni, stands as a vibrant testament to the Italian Renaissance in Bergamo's Città Alta. Built between 1472 and 1476, this funerary chapel was commissioned by Bartolomeo Colleoni, a prominent condottiero, as his personal mausoleum and a shrine for his daughter Medea. Designed by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, the chapel is dedicated to Saints Bartholomew, Mark, and John the Baptist. The chapel's construction was an act of defiance, as Colleoni reportedly ordered the demolition of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore's sacristy to make way for his mausoleum. The facade is characterized by inlaid polychrome marble in white, red, and black lozenges. A rose window sits above the main portal, flanked by medallions of Julius Caesar and Trajan. The upper part of the basement features reliefs of biblical stories and the labors of Hercules. The interior houses the tomb of Bartolomeo Colleoni, adorned with reliefs depicting episodes from the Life of Christ, statues, and an equestrian statue of Colleoni in gilded wood. The chapel's walls are decorated with frescoes and stuccoes, including works by Giambattista Tiepolo. The frescoes depict biblical and allegorical scenes with vivid colors and bold perspectives. The tomb of Medea Colleoni is also located within the chapel. For centuries, the location of Colleoni's remains was a mystery until a hidden crypt beneath his monument was discovered in 1969. Today, the Colleoni Chapel stands as a symbol of the power and magnificence of its patron, drawing visitors from around the world. Touching the heraldic symbol on the entrance gate at midnight is said to bring good luck, adding to the chapel's mystique.
