Villa Melzi: A Renaissance Gem on the Adda River

Villa Melzi d'Eril, a stunning residential villa, graces the banks of the Adda River in Vaprio d'Adda. Constructed in 1482 by Giovanni Melzi, Count Palatine, the villa stands as a testament to Renaissance architecture and aristocratic patronage. Originally conceived as a noble residence with strategic importance, it has evolved through the centuries, bearing witness to significant historical events and artistic endeavors.The villa is particularly renowned for hosting Leonardo da Vinci between 1511 and 1513. During his stay, Leonardo conducted studies for his treatise on water and sketched landscapes along the Adda River. Some believe that Leonardo da Vinci may have contributed to the fresco known as “Madonnone”. The villa also housed Leonardo's drawings and machines, which were left to Giovanni Francesco Melzi. Today, Villa Melzi remains a private property, owned by the Melzi d'Eril family. While the interiors are not accessible to the public, the villa forms a key part of the Leonardo da Vinci Ecomuseum of Adda, attracting visitors who appreciate its historical and artistic value.The villa's architecture reflects a blend of styles, with its current appearance largely shaped by 19th-century renovations. However, its foundations lie in the 15th century, with expansions made in the 17th century, resulting in an austere classicism reminiscent of Roman architecture. The facades, framed by rusticated cornerstones and the chiaroscuro of corbels, exude a timeless elegance.
