Villa Olmo: A Neoclassical Jewel on Lake Como

Villa Olmo, located on the shores of Lake Como, is a magnificent example of neoclassical architecture. Commissioned by Marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi in the late 1700s, the villa was designed by Simone Cantoni and completed in 1812. Its name derives from a once-famous elm tree that graced the grounds. Throughout its history, Villa Olmo has hosted numerous illustrious guests, including Napoleon Bonaparte, Ugo Foscolo, and Giuseppe Garibaldi. In 1924, the City of Como acquired the villa and transformed it into a venue for cultural events and art exhibitions. The villa's main façade features a central body with five entrances and six Ionic columns, topped by a balustrade. Inside, visitors can admire the richly decorated interiors, including frescoes by Andrea Appiani and Domenico Pozzi, a small theater dating back to 1883, and a grand staircase adorned with stuccos and embellishments. The villa is surrounded by extensive gardens, including an Italian garden with symmetrical flowerbeds, a large fountain, and statues of pagan gods, and an English garden with a neoclassical temple. The gardens provide a tranquil escape and offer stunning views of Lake Como. Today, Villa Olmo continues to host cultural events and exhibitions, attracting visitors from around the world. While the villa itself may be temporarily closed for restoration, the park remains partially accessible, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful outdoor surroundings.
