Discover more about Visconti-Sforza Castle

The Visconti-Sforza Castle in Vigevano stands as a remarkable example of medieval architecture and a testament to the power and influence of the Visconti and Sforza families. Originally built in the 14th century, Luchino Visconti, Lord of Milan, initiated the transformation of an existing fortification into a family residence. The construction was continued by Gian Galeazzo Visconti and completed by his heirs, including Ludovico il Moro and Gian Galeazzo Sforza. Leonardo da Vinci is known to have frequented Vigevano and supposedly contributed to the works. The castle complex spans an impressive 70,000 square meters and comprises several buildings arranged elliptically, each serving different purposes. The imposing main body, known as the Maschio or Ducal Palace, features a U-shaped plan with two wings facing the courtyard's center. The Ladies' Palace (Loggia delle Dame), designed by Bramante, was reserved for the Duchess and her ladies. Other notable structures included a falcon breeding building (Falconiera) and stables for horses (Scuderie). The Bramante Tower, completed in 1491, was modeled after the Milan Castle tower and served as a visible symbol of power. During the late 15th century, Beatrice d'Este, wife of Ludovico il Moro, frequented the castle, adding prestige to Vigevano as a courteous residence. After the Sforza dynasty, the castle's use declined under Spanish rule and was later used for military purposes by the Austrian and Italian armies until 1968. Restoration began in 1980, and parts of the castle have since been opened to the public, including the city museum and exhibition spaces. Today, visitors can explore the grand halls, admire intricate frescoes, and wander through the beautiful gardens, experiencing the grandeur of medieval life and immersing themselves in Vigevano's rich heritage.
