Biblioteca Salaborsa: A Modern Library in a Historic Palazzo

Biblioteca Salaborsa is a vibrant public library in Bologna, Italy, located in the Palazzo d'Accursio on Piazza del Nettuno. This unique library blends modern resources with historical significance, offering visitors a multifaceted experience. The building itself has a rich history. Originally constructed in the 19th century as a stock exchange (Sala Borsa), the building was transformed into a modern library in 2001. The renovation preserved the building's neoclassical architecture while incorporating modern technology and design. One of the library's most distinctive features is its transparent floor, which reveals archaeological excavations beneath. These ruins date back to the Roman city of Bononia (189 BC) and even earlier Etruscan settlements. Visitors can also explore the archaeological site from the basement level, where informative displays provide context. Today, Biblioteca Salaborsa serves as a cultural hub, offering a wide range of resources and services. These include book lending, digital resources, study spaces, exhibitions, and cultural events. The library also has a dedicated children's area and spaces for exhibitions and events. Opening hours are Monday 2:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday to Friday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Saturday 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The library is closed on Sundays. Admission is free.
