Discover more about Cattedrale Metropolitana di San Pietro

The Cattedrale Metropolitana di San Pietro, located on Via dell'Indipendenza, is the primary cathedral of Bologna. Its origins trace back to the 10th century, though the current structure largely reflects a reconstruction from the 17th and 18th centuries. The cathedral holds the seat of the Archbishop of Bologna and is dedicated to Saint Peter. Originally a Romanesque cathedral, it suffered damage from a fire in 1141 and underwent several renovations throughout its history. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII elevated the Bishop of Bologna to Archbishop, thus upgrading the cathedral's status. The late 16th century saw significant remodeling to assert papal authority, which obscured much of the original Romanesque-Gothic design. The interior was extensively renovated in the Baroque style starting in 1605. The facade was added between 1743 and 1747. Inside, visitors can admire a 12th-century Romanesque crucifix carved from cedarwood and a 16th-century terracotta sculpture series, "Lament over the Dead Christ" by Lombardi. Frescoes, including a beautiful Annunciation by Ludovico Carracci, and paintings by local artists further enrich the interior. The cathedral's treasure safeguards 14th-century artifacts and liturgical vestments. The bell tower, standing 70 meters tall, houses Bologna's largest bell, "La Nonna" (the Grandmother), weighing 3.3 tonnes. The bell is rung using the traditional 'alla bolognese' method, a full-circle ringing technique developed in the 16th century.
