Discover more about Palazzo Re Enzo

Palazzo Re Enzo, also known as 'Palazzo Nuovo' , stands as a prominent historical landmark in Bologna, gracing Piazza del Nettuno. Constructed between 1244 and 1246, it initially served as an extension to the Palazzo del Podestà to meet the growing needs of the Commune of Bologna. The palace derives its name from King Enzo of Sardinia, son of Emperor Frederick II, who was captured during the Battle of Fossalta and imprisoned within its walls from 1249 until his death in 1272. Originally intended for public functions, Palazzo Re Enzo became intertwined with King Enzo's life. Legend says that Enzo was granted freedom within the palace during the day but was confined to a cage suspended from the ceiling at night. Despite his captivity, he was allowed to meet women and fathered several children. One legend even suggests that he had a son named Bentivoglio with a peasant woman, who became the ancestor of the Bentivoglio family that later ruled Bologna. Over the centuries, Palazzo Re Enzo has undergone several transformations. In 1386, Antonio di Vincenzo completed the Sala dei Trecento, which later became the city's archive. The upper floor was renovated in 1771 by Giovanni Giacomo Dotti. In 1905, Alfonso Rubbiani restored the palace to its current Gothic appearance, rebuilding the merlons, ground-floor arches, and 15th-century staircase. Today, Palazzo Re Enzo hosts cultural events, exhibitions, congresses, and corporate meetings, blending its historical charm with modern functionality. Visitors can explore the palace's various rooms and halls, including the Salone del Podestà, Sala degli Atti, Sala del Re Enzo, and Sala del Quadrante. The chapel of Santa Maria dei Carcerati, where condemned prisoners once prayed, is also accessible. The palace's courtyard offers panoramic views of Piazza del Nettuno.
