Overview
Parco Archeologico Novi Ark offers a unique window into the Roman past of Modena. Located within the Parco Novi Sad, this archaeological site displays the remains of Mutina, a strategic Roman city. The park's creation was a compromise between constructing an underground parking facility and preserving archaeological discoveries made during the excavation. The park features a 118-meter stretch of original Roman cobblestone road, complete with visible ruts from ancient carts. Alongside the road, you'll find reconstructed funerary monuments and the foundations of rural buildings, providing insights into daily life in Mutina between the 1st century BC and the 5th century AD.Also showcased are the remains of rural structures, including a stone well, a rectangular basin likely used for sheep washing, and a circular basin possibly for carp breeding – a delicacy for the Romans. The park's vegetation reflects plant species documented in the area during Roman times. The on-site museum displays recovered amphorae from ancient waste disposal pits. The park is open 24/7 with informational panels in Italian and English for adults and children.
