Parco della Montagnola: Bologna's Historic Green Heart
Bologna's oldest park, Parco della Montagnola, offers a blend of history, art, and green space near the city center and train station.
Parco della Montagnola, inaugurated in 1664, holds the distinction of being Bologna's oldest public park. Its origins trace back to an artificial hill formed from the debris of the Galliera Castle, built in the 14th century. Over the centuries, the park has evolved from a leveled area with mulberry trees into a landscaped space for leisure and entertainment. The park's current layout largely reflects early 19th-century redesigns ordered by Napoleon, with architect Giovan Battista Martinetti giving it a French-style makeover. Key features include the monumental Pincio staircase, constructed in 1896, adorned with sculptures and bas-reliefs by prominent artists. The central Fountain of the Nymph, celebrated in verse by Giosuè Carducci, adds to the park's artistic charm. Throughout its history, Parco della Montagnola has served as a focal point for various events, performances, and summer activities. Today, visitors can enjoy its gardens, relax in the shade of centuries-old plane trees, and take in panoramic views of Bologna's skyline. The park also hosts the Montagnola Republic, a series of free concerts, workshops, and cultural events from June to September.
