Piazza Santo Stefano: Bologna's Seven Churches Square

Piazza Santo Stefano, a historical and architectural gem in Bologna, is more accurately described as a widening of Via Santo Stefano rather than a conventional square. Its alternative name, Piazza delle Sette Chiese, alludes to the Basilica di Santo Stefano, a complex of interconnected religious structures that dominate the space. While originally comprising seven churches, only four remain today. The Basilica's origins trace back to the 5th century, potentially established by Bishop Petronius on a former pagan site. Over time, it evolved into a Benedictine sanctuary. The buildings have been renovated in different periods. Today, the complex includes the Church of the Crucifix, the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre (modeled after Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre), and the Santi Vitale e Agricola, Bologna's oldest church. The piazza is surrounded by aristocratic palaces showcasing Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. Notable buildings include Casa Berti, adorned with frescoes by Gaetano Gandolfi, Palazzo Isolani, and Palazzo Bolognini Amorini Salina, distinguished by its terracotta heads. The Corte Isolani passage connects the piazza to Strada Maggiore. Piazza Santo Stefano serves as a meeting point for various social groups and often hosts cultural events, flea markets, and concerts. Its blend of historical significance and vibrant social atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination in Bologna.
