Discover more about Two Towers

Rising from Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, the Two Towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, represent Bologna's historical significance and architectural heritage. Constructed in the early 12th century, these towers served as defensive fortifications and symbols of power for the Asinelli and Garisenda families. The taller of the two, the Asinelli Tower, stands at 97.2 meters (approximately 319 feet) and offers panoramic views of Bologna after a climb of 498 steps. The Garisenda Tower, while shorter at 47 meters, is known for its pronounced lean, even more so than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Originally, Bologna boasted over a hundred towers, but only about twenty remain today. The Two Towers have witnessed many historical events, including serving as a military observation point during World War II. Today, the base of the Asinelli Tower hosts craft stores, reminiscent of the area's medieval commercial activity. Legend has it that students who climb the Asinelli Tower before graduating may not receive their degree. Despite the challenging climb, the views from the top of the Asinelli Tower are worth the effort, offering a unique perspective on the city's red rooftops and surrounding landscape. Note that the Asinelli Tower is currently closed due to maintenance work.
