    Discover more about Villa Ghigi

Villa Ghigi, located just outside Porta San Mamolo, is one of Bologna's best green escapes, offering panoramic views of the city and a refreshing connection with nature. This 28-hectare park, open to the public since 1975, exemplifies the hilly landscape just south of Bologna. The park's history dates back to the 17th century, with the Ghigi family acquiring the property in 1864. Alessandro Ghigi, a renowned zoologist and rector of the University of Bologna, resided here and was a pioneer in Italian nature conservation. In 1972, the family ceded the property to the Municipality of Bologna. Today, the Fondazione Villa Ghigi manages the park, offering guided tours and educational activities. Villa Ghigi features a blend of cultivated and natural areas, including meadows, groves, orchards, and vineyards. Visitors can explore diverse tree species, such as downy oaks, black hornbeams, and a centuries-old Himalayan cedar. The park also showcases heritage fruit trees and vines, preserving the region's botanical history. The park has three entrances: Via San Mamolo, Via Martucci, and Via di Gaibola. The main entrance on Via San Mamolo is easily accessible by bus. The upper entrance on Via di Gaibola offers a large parking area and stunning views. While the villa itself remains abandoned and awaiting restoration, the park provides a tranquil retreat for walks, picnics, and enjoying the Bolognese countryside. The Casa del Custode (Caretaker's House) has been repurposed as a refreshment area and event space. The Fondazione Villa Ghigi organizes events, workshops, and guided walks throughout the year, focusing on botany, agriculture, zoology, history, and culture.
