Discover more about Campanile San Nicolò

Rising 96 meters high, the Campanile di San Nicolò is a prominent symbol of Lecco, its unique octagonal shape and pointed spire earning it the nickname 'Il Matitone'. Construction of the campanile began in 1882, following the expansion of the Basilica di San Nicolò. The campanile was built upon a pre-existing medieval tower that was once part of the city's defensive walls. This strategic placement provided a solid foundation for the ambitious structure. The campanile's construction faced challenges, including design changes and funding shortages. Work was temporarily halted in 1894 but was completed in 1903 with the placement of a cross at the top. The following year, nine bells, each dedicated to a sacred figure, were installed, and their festive sound rang out for the first time on Christmas night in 1904. Visitors who ascend the campanile are rewarded with breathtaking views. From the top, one can see the shimmering waters of Lake Como, the city of Lecco, and the encircling mountains. The climb consists of 396 steps and is not recommended for individuals with heart conditions, vertigo, or claustrophobia, and children under six are not permitted to climb. The Basilica di San Nicolò, adjacent to the campanile, is also worth a visit, showcasing a neoclassical style and a rich history.
