Discover more about Lame Rosse

The Lame Rosse, translating to "Red Blades," are a captivating geological formation located within the Monti Sibillini National Park in the Marche region of Italy. These formations are found near Lake Fiastra, in the district of San Lorenzo al Lago in the Municipality of Fiastra. Often compared to landscapes on Mars or the Grand Canyon, the Lame Rosse feature towering rock columns with a distinctive red hue, the result of iron oxide within the sandstone. Millions of years of erosion by wind, rain, and temperature fluctuations have sculpted the sandstone and clay sediments into the intricate maze of columns and ridges seen today. The "red blades" are composed of gravel held together by clay and silt. In the local dialect, the name refers to a dissolving surface, a testament to the ongoing erosion that shapes the landscape. The Lame Rosse offer a rewarding hiking experience. The most common route starts from Lake Fiastra, a man-made reservoir dammed in the mid-1950s. The round trip is approximately 7 kilometers with a 200-meter climb, making it suitable for most hikers. The trail passes through varied terrain, including a holm oak wood that provides shade. The area is rich in flora and fauna due to the abundance of water. Besides hiking, visitors can enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Lake Fiastra, swim, fish, or rent canoes and paddle boats. The lake also has beaches and trails for cycling. The nearby village of San Lorenzo al Lago offers restaurants and other facilities.
