Parco del Colle Oppio, a captivating blend of nature and history, extends over approximately 11 hectares on the Oppian Hill, one of Rome's famous seven hills. The park's origins trace back to 1871, when it was established as a public garden during Rome's urban reorganization. However, its current layout largely reflects the urban planning initiatives of Mussolini's era.The park offers a tranquil escape with lawns, slopes, and terraces, providing exceptional views of the Colosseum and Palatine Hill. It's an 'archaeological garden' where visitors can explore the remains of significant ancient Roman structures. The most notable is the Domus Aurea (Golden House of Nero), an extravagant palace built after the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD. Later, the Baths of Trajan and the Baths of Titus were constructed on top of the Domus Aurea.The park's design features two main avenues, Viale della Domus Aurea and Viale Mizzi, adorned with fountains that add a romantic touch. The vegetation includes Mediterranean plants like pines and cypresses, as well as exotic species such as palms. Facilities include a playground, sports equipment, and multi-purpose fields.Recent renovations, including a complete restoration in 2020, have enhanced the park's appeal.
