Discover more about Rocca Calascio

Rocca Calascio, one of Italy's highest fortresses, stands at 1,460 meters above sea level in the Gran Sasso and Laga Mountains National Park. Originally built in the 10th century as a simple watchtower, the fortress was expanded over time, particularly in the 14th and 16th centuries. Its primary purpose was military, serving as a strategic observation point to control the surrounding valleys and mountain pastures. The fortress is constructed of white limestone and features a square layout with four cylindrical towers. The entrance, originally accessible via a retractable wooden bridge, is now reached by a modern wooden drawbridge. The castle's strategic importance waned over time, and it was severely damaged by the 1703 earthquake, leading to its abandonment. Restoration efforts in the late 20th century have preserved the site, making it accessible to visitors. Not far from the castle, the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, built in 1596, adds to the picturesque setting. Legend says the church was built by the people of Rocca Calascio after they defeated a band of bandits. Rocca Calascio has also served as a filming location for movies such as 'Ladyhawke' and 'The Name of the Rose'. Today, Rocca Calascio is a popular tourist destination, offering hiking and mountain biking opportunities with breathtaking views.
