Rocca dei Borgia: A Fortress Steeped in History

The Rocca dei Borgia, a magnificent fortress in the charming town of Nepi, stands as a testament to the region's rich history and the powerful families who once controlled it. Constructed in the 15th century on the site of previous Etruscan-Roman fortifications, the castle gained prominence under Rodrigo Borgia, who later became Pope Alexander VI. He commissioned significant renovations by the architect Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, transforming it into a more fortified and livable residence. The castle's design reflects its evolution through the ages. It features a polygonal layout with cylindrical towers at each corner, offering strategic views of the surrounding Agro Falisco. Visitors can explore the inner courtyard, the imposing keep, and the remains of kitchens, service areas, and reception rooms. The upper floors once housed the castellan's quarters and guest rooms, providing a glimpse into the castle's domestic life. In 1499, Rodrigo Borgia, now Pope Alexander VI, gifted the castle to his daughter Lucrezia Borgia, who further enhanced its livability and contributed to a period of prosperity for Nepi. The Farnese family later took possession, adding defensive structures to increase Nepi's strategic importance. Although Nepi eventually lost its strategic value, the Rocca dei Borgia remains an iconic landmark, offering visitors a unique blend of history, architecture, and breathtaking landscapes.
