Torre dei Lambardi: A Medieval Sentinel Over Magione

Explore Torre dei Lambardi in Magione: a medieval tower with panoramic views, a rich history, and a captivating museum experience.

4.2

Rising from a hilltop in Magione, the Torre dei Lambardi stands as a testament to medieval military architecture and strategic importance. Constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries by the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem (now the Sovereign Military Order of Malta), the tower played a vital role in controlling the flow of supplies to Perugia, particularly fish from Lake Trasimeno. The tower itself is approximately 30 meters high with a quadrangular shape. Its internal structure is divided into three floors and two half-floors, topped by a terrace offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Originally, the interior likely featured three stone floors and three wooden ones, connected by a spiral staircase. While only a small portion of the original staircase remains, an elevator now provides access to the upper floors. Over the centuries, the tower's strategic importance diminished, and it eventually became property of the local community. It even served as a municipal dog pound and a site for the annual livestock fair in the 18th and 19th centuries. After falling into disrepair, restoration efforts began in the early 20th century, with significant work done in 1983. Today, the restored tower houses a small museum with historical artifacts and exhibits related to the local culture and the tower's history. The surrounding park provides a pleasant space for relaxation and recreation. The origin of the tower's name is debated. Some believe it refers to the Knights of St. John, who were considered the nobility of the rural community. Others suggest it commemorates Marcello Lombardi, who was murdered near the tower in 1688. Regardless of its origin, the Torre dei Lambardi remains a significant landmark in Magione, offering visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty.
