Discover more about Bravio delle botti

The Bravio delle Botti is a captivating and strenuous barrel race that takes place every year in Montepulciano, a charming hilltop town in Tuscany known for its Vino Nobile. Celebrated annually on the last Sunday of August, this event sees teams from Montepulciano's eight contrade (districts) compete by rolling 80 kg wine barrels up the steep, winding streets of the town's historic center, all the way to the finish line in Piazza Grande. The race is a revival of a tradition that dates back to the 14th century when a horse race was held among the villages. The horse race was banned in the 17th century due to public safety concerns, but in 1974, a local priest, Don Marcello Del Balio, reimagined the competition, replacing horses with wine barrels to celebrate Montepulciano's wine production. Each of the eight contrade—Cagnano, Collazzi, Le Coste, Gracciano, Poggiolo, San Donato, Talosa, and Voltaia—is represented by two spingitori (barrel pushers) who must navigate the challenging 1800-meter uphill course. Collisions are common due to the narrow streets and cumbersome barrels, adding to the excitement. The first team to reach the Piazza Grande wins the 'Bravio,' a painted cloth banner depicting the town's patron saint, San Giovanni Decollato (Saint John the Beheaded). The race is the highlight of a week-long festival featuring historical parades with over 300 participants in costume, flag-waving displays, drum performances, and the blessing of the districts and barrels. Food stalls offer regional delicacies and local wines, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
