Discover more about Castello di Brolio

Castello di Brolio, an imposing castle in the Chianti Classico region, has been owned by the Ricasoli family for over 800 years. Located on a hilltop a few kilometers from Gaiole in Chianti, the castle's origins date back to the Lombardic period. Its strategic position has made it a key site in the conflicts between Florence and Siena, resulting in its destruction and reconstruction multiple times throughout history. The castle's current neo-Gothic design is largely attributed to Baron Bettino Ricasoli in the 19th century. Bettino Ricasoli, also known as the 'Iron Baron,' was a significant figure in Italian politics and is credited with establishing the original formula for Chianti wine in 1872. Today, the estate spans 1,200 hectares, including 240 hectares of vineyards, making it the largest wine-producing estate in the Chianti Classico region. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, including the Renaissance gardens, the family chapel, and a small museum that houses family weapons and artifacts related to Bettino Ricasoli. The museum showcases Ricasoli's contributions to winemaking and Italian unification. The castle offers various tours, including visits to the gardens, the Ricasoli Collection, and wine-tasting experiences. The gardens provide panoramic views of the Chianti countryside, and the wine shop offers tastings of the estate's renowned Chianti Classico wines. Keep an eye out for the local legend that the ghost of Bettino Ricasoli roams the castle grounds during full moon nights.
