Located a kilometer from the center of Lucignano, the Santuario della Madonna della Querce is a Renaissance-style church with a rich history. The sanctuary's origins trace back to a large oak tree where an image of the Madonna was painted. In 1417, a tabernacle was erected at the site, which became a place of veneration. A spring discovered during construction was considered miraculous, adding to the site's significance. The church's design is attributed to Giorgio Vasari, a prominent architect of the 16th century, though it's likely he did not oversee the construction personally. The church features a rectangular layout with three naves. The facade is simple, adorned with a central rose window made of pietra serena and two windows. Inside, the space is structured with columns and arches, leading to a presbytery with a deep choir. The interior design emphasizes the main altar, reflecting Counter-Reformation principles. In 1697, Pope Innocent XI designated the church as the Sanctuary of the Virgine Addolorata of Tuscany. Among the notable artworks is a painting of Saints Benedict, Apollonia, and Catherine of Siena (1625) by Matteo Rosselli. The sanctuary also holds a collection of approximately 50 wooden ex-voto tablets from the late 16th and 17th centuries.
