Discover more about Castle of Vincigliata

Nestled on a rocky hill to the east of Fiesole, the Castle of Vincigliata offers visitors a step back in time to a romanticized vision of the medieval era. The castle's origins trace back to 1031 when it was owned by the Visdomini family. Over the centuries, it passed through several hands and eventually fell into disrepair. In 1840, John Temple-Leader, a wealthy Englishman, purchased the ruins and embarked on a 15-year restoration project. With the help of architect Giuseppe Fancelli, the castle was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style, incorporating elements of the original structure while adding a romantic flair. Temple Leader also reorganized the surrounding estate and created a new garden in the romantic style of his homeland, planting cypresses, pines, shrubs and bushes of central Italian woodlands, and called it the Bosco di Vincigliata. The castle served as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, housing high-ranking British officers. Today, Vincigliata Castle is a popular venue for events, weddings, and receptions. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved rooms, elegant halls, and charming courtyards. The castle also houses a cycle of frescoes dating back to the 14th century. The panoramic location offers breathtaking views of Florence and the surrounding countryside. Legend has it that the castle is haunted by the spirit of Bianca, a young bride who died of a broken heart after her groom was murdered by her brothers on their wedding day.
