Discover more about English Garden

The English Garden, a verdant oasis within the Royal Palace of Caserta complex, presents a captivating blend of nature and artifice. Commissioned in the late 1700s by King Ferdinand IV, and brought to life by Carlo Vanvitelli and John Andrew Graefer, the garden embodies the English landscape style, contrasting with the geometric Italian gardens. Queen Maria Carolina sought to outshine the Petit Trianon of Versailles with this creation. Covering 24 hectares, the garden showcases man-made hills, meadows, ponds, and canals, populated with plants from around the globe. Visitors can explore various features, including the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon, the Cryptoporticus, and the Bath of Venus. The garden also houses the first Camellia japonica to arrive in continental Europe. Throughout its history, the English Garden has served multiple purposes, including use as a military airfield during World War II and a botanical garden in the 19th century. Today, it stands as a testament to the vision of its creators, offering visitors a serene retreat and a glimpse into the past.
