La Torre Cerniola: A Coastal Sentinel of Erchie

La Torre Cerniola, also known as Torre Erchie (Erchie Tower), is an imposing medieval watchtower that dominates the eastern end of the beach in Erchie, a small fishing village on the Amalfi Coast. Constructed in 1278, the tower served as a crucial defense point against Saracen and pirate incursions. Today, it stands as a silent guardian of the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.Erchie itself is nestled in a valley, surrounded by the Lattari Mountains, and has been described as an "amphitheater with a sea view". The village's name is believed to have originated from a temple dedicated to Hercules. While public access to the tower's interior is not permitted, the structure can be admired from the promontory on the opposite end of the beach, from the sea, or from the road leading from the bus stop.
