La Trinità della Cava: A Millennial Benedictine Sanctuary

La Trinità della Cava, also known as Badia di Cava, is a territorial abbey that has stood for over a thousand years as a beacon of faith and learning. Founded in 1011 by Saint Alferius, a nobleman-turned-monk, the abbey quickly grew into a prominent center of Benedictine life.Throughout its history, La Trinità della Cava enjoyed the patronage of popes and princes, becoming a powerful force in Southern Italy. Its abbots once held episcopal authority over the surrounding territory, and the abbey served as a refuge for both religious figures and the local population.The abbey's architecture reflects various periods, with the church modernized in 1796 while preserving its old Gothic cloisters. The basilica was renovated in 1761, with remnants of the original 11th-century building including the Chapel of the Holy Fathers, an 11th-century altar, a 15th-century majolica floor, and a 12th-century pulpit.
