Lake Avernus: Gateway to the Underworld

Lake Avernus (Lago d'Averno) is a captivating volcanic crater lake located in the Campania region of southern Italy, approximately 4 kilometers west of Pozzuoli. This nearly circular lake, with a circumference of 2 kilometers and a depth of 60 meters, lies within the Avernus crater, part of the Phlegraean Fields, a vast volcanic area. In ancient times, Lake Avernus held a mystical and ominous reputation. The Greeks and Romans believed it was the entrance to the underworld, a gateway to Hades. The name 'Avernus,' derived from the Greek word 'Aornos' meaning 'without birds,' stemmed from the volcanic gases that once emanated from the lake, preventing birds from flying over it. Roman writers often used the lake's name synonymously with the underworld. Virgil's Aeneid famously describes Aeneas's descent to the underworld through a cave near the lake. Legends also placed the grove of Hecate and the grotto of the Cumaean Sibyl nearby. Despite its grim reputation, the Romans settled on the shores of Lake Avernus, establishing villas and vineyards. In 37 BC, Marcus Agrippa transformed the lake into a naval base called Portus Julius, connecting it to the sea via a canal and to Cumae via the Grotta di Cocceio, a 1-kilometer-long underground passage. This tunnel, wide enough for chariots, remained in use until the 1940s. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of ancient temples dedicated to Phoebus and Juno along the lakeshore. Today, Lake Avernus is a natural oasis with diverse flora and fauna. The area is ideal for walks, birdwatching, and exploring historical sites.
