Sedil Dominova, situated on Via San Cesareo in Sorrento, is a remarkable testament to the city's history. Constructed between 1319 and 1344, this building served as a gathering place for Sorrento's nobles and aristocracy, where they convened to discuss politics and make important decisions. The name 'Sedil Dominova' translates to 'seat, house, new'. Architecturally, the Sedil Dominova has retained much of its original 15th-century structure. The building features two open sides with large round arches and archaic capitals. The dome, added later, is adorned with 'riggiole,' typical majolica tiles crafted in the 18th century by Rigiolario Chiajese from Naples. The external walls showcase frescoes with allegorical statues, angels, cherubs, and crowns, painted in the 18th century by artists from the school of Sorrento painter Carlo Amalfi. The 'lozenges' of Sorrento, representing the city's coat of arms and the Angevin lilies, are displayed on the building's external corner. Throughout its history, Sedil Dominova has undergone several transformations. In 1877, it became the headquarters of the Workers' Mutual Aid Society of Sorrento, a trade union that provided mutual assistance to workers. Today, visitors can observe locals engaging in card games within the loggia, a tradition that adds to the building's unique charm. Despite its transformation into a tourist attraction, Sedil Dominova remains a symbol of Sorrento's history and a must-see for those seeking to immerse themselves in the city's cultural heritage.
