Via Grotta Azzurra is more than just a road; it's the final land-based leg of a journey to one of nature's most stunning spectacles: the Blue Grotto. Located in Anacapri, the quieter, elevated sister town to Capri, this route carries visitors towards the northwestern coast of the island and the entrance to the famed sea cave.
The Blue Grotto itself boasts a rich history, having been known since Roman times when it was used as a sea nymphaeum, a sanctuary dedicated to water nymphs. Roman ruins and artifacts discovered within the cave suggest its significance as a place of worship in antiquity. After a period of obscurity, the grotto was rediscovered in 1826 by the German artist August Kopisch, who brought its beauty to the world's attention.
The cave's ethereal blue glow is created by sunlight that enters through an underwater opening, refracting through the water to illuminate the cavern. Visitors are transported into the grotto in small rowing boats, lying back to pass through the narrow entrance. Inside, the experience is otherworldly, with the entire cave bathed in an intense azure light.
While swimming is not permitted inside the Grotto, some people enjoy swimming after closing time.

Public Transport
From Anacapri's Piazza della Pace (Piazza Cimitero), take the ATC bus towards the Grotta Azzurra. The bus journey takes approximately 20 minutes. Alight near the entrance to the Grotta Azzurra and descend the steps to the landing. At the floating ticket office, purchase your entry ticket for approximately €18. Board a small rowing boat for a tour of the grotto. The boat ride lasts around 5 minutes. Bus ticket: €2.40.
Taxi
From Anacapri town center, a taxi to the Grotta Azzurra takes around 15 minutes. Taxis can be found at Piazza Vittoria. Ask the driver to drop you off at the entrance to the Grotta Azzurra, where you'll find steps leading down to the landing. Purchase your entry ticket (€18) at the floating ticket office. Board a small rowing boat to enter the grotto. Taxi fare: Approximately €25 from Anacapri to the Blue Grotto.
Walking
From the center of Anacapri, walk along Viale T. de Tommaso, then Via Pagliaro, and finally Via Grotta Azzurra. The walk is approximately 3.5 km and takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour. At the end of Via Grotta Azzurra, a staircase descends to the entrance of the grotto. Purchase your entry ticket (€18) at the floating ticket office. Board a small rowing boat for the visit.
