Discover more about Sasso Tagliato

Sasso Tagliato is more than just a geological formation; it's a place steeped in legend and religious significance. Located along the path between Orvieto and the village of Sugano, this 'cut rock' is associated with the Miracle of Bolsena. According to Catholic tradition, in 1263, a Bohemian priest named Peter of Prague was on a pilgrimage to Rome, struggling with doubts about the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. While celebrating Mass in Bolsena, the consecrated host began to bleed, with drops falling onto the altar cloth. This event prompted the priest to seek out Pope Urban IV, who was residing in nearby Orvieto. As the story goes, when the Sacred Corporal (the altar cloth stained with the blood of the host) was being transported from Bolsena to Orvieto, a massive rock blocked the path. Miraculously, the rock split open, creating a passage for the procession. This 'cut' is now known as Sasso Tagliato, and a marble plaque commemorates the legendary event. The Sacred Corporal is now housed in a reliquary in the Chapel of the Corporal in Orvieto's Duomo. Today, Sasso Tagliato is recognized as a natural landmark with historical and religious importance. Visitors can walk the path between Orvieto and Sugano, experiencing the landscape and reflecting on the stories associated with this unique site.
