Discover more about Antico Stabilimento Balneare di Mondello

The Antico Stabilimento Balneare di Mondello, also known as Charleston, is a stunning example of Art Nouveau architecture located in Mondello, a seaside resort north of Palermo, Sicily. This unique building is one of the most beautiful examples of Liberty style in Europe and a defining element of the famous Mondello Gulf panorama. Constructed in 1912, the building sits on cement pylons embedded in the bay, showcasing early reinforced concrete use in Palermo. The structure was initially conceived for the Belgian city of Ostend. The beachfront area of Mondello was once a malaria-ridden swamp until it was drained in the late 19th century. A Belgian company, Les Tramways de Palerme, then leased much of the area, establishing a trolley line to Palermo and electrifying the area, leading to the construction of pleasure villas. The building's design, with its colorful decorations, turrets, and spires, was traditionally attributed to Rudolf Stualker, though recent research suggests this was a misspelling of Rodolfo Stoelcker, a German-Italian structural engineer who designed the building's foundations. During World War II, the facility was occupied by Italian, German, and Allied forces, resulting in the removal of much of its furniture. A refurbishment in the 1990s aimed to restore the structure and decorations, and it now houses a restaurant and hosts beachside activities.
