    Discover more about Palazzina Cinese

Nestled within the Parco della Favorita, the Palazzina Cinese (Chinese Palace) is a captivating blend of Sicilian and Eastern architectural styles. Commissioned by King Ferdinand III of Sicily in 1799, during his exile from Naples, the palace reflects the European aristocracy's fascination with Chinese culture. The palace was designed by Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia, who transformed an existing Chinese-style house owned by Baron Benedetto Lombardo. Completed between 1800 and 1806, the Palazzina Cinese served as a royal residence and hunting lodge. Its architecture is an eclectic mix of Chinoiserie, neoclassical, and Rococo elements. The exterior features intricate details, including carved wooden beams and a pagoda-style octagonal terrace. Inside, the palace is adorned with frescoes and paintings by artists like Giuseppe Velazquez and Vincenzo Riolo, depicting scenes that blend Sicilian elegance with oriental fantasy. The palace also features a dining room with a 'mathematical table' that could be raised and lowered from the kitchens below, allowing the royals to dine without servants present. After the Unification of Italy in 1860, the palace became the property of the Comune of Palermo and was converted into a museum. Today, it houses the Ethnographic Museum of Sicily, showcasing local traditions and cultural artifacts. The Palazzina Cinese stands as a symbol of Palermo's diverse cultural influences and offers a glimpse into the world of 18th-century European royalty.
