Discover more about Parco della Favorita

Parco della Favorita, also known as Real Tenuta della Favorita, is a sprawling urban park in Palermo, Italy, located at the foot of Monte Pellegrino. Established in 1799 by Ferdinand III of Sicily, it is the largest green area in Palermo, covering 400 hectares. The park was created to serve as a royal hunting ground and a place for agricultural experimentation. King Ferdinand III, inspired by other European monarchies, transformed rocky terrain into a lush Mediterranean landscape, cultivating citrus groves, olive trees, and implementing innovative agricultural practices. The park also featured an elaborate water management system with a 12-kilometer aqueduct and a large reservoir. Today, Parco della Favorita is a vital green lung for the city, offering a blend of history, nature, and culture. Two long avenues, Viale Ercole and Viale Diana, cross the park, connecting Palermo to Mondello. Within the park, visitors can explore attractions like the Palazzina Cinese, Villa Niscemi, and the Fontana d'Ercole. The park also contains the Stadio Renzo Barbera and other sports facilities. The park is part of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Monte Pellegrino, established in 1995, due to its rich flora and rare species. Key features include the Palazzina Cinese, a former royal residence with the Museo Etnografico Siciliano Giuseppe Pitrè attached, Villa Niscemi, and the Neoclassical Fountain of Hercules.
