Discover more about Castello a Mare

Castello a Mare, also known as Castellammare, stands as a testament to Palermo's rich and diverse history. Located at the entrance to the city's historic port, this ancient fortress has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, from the Arab-Norman period to the Spanish and Bourbon reigns. Originally constructed in the 9th century by the Arabs to protect the bustling port from naval invasions and pirate attacks, Castello a Mare has evolved significantly over the centuries. The Normans, Spaniards, and Renaissance architects further enhanced its architectural features. For a period, it even served as the residence for the viceroys of Sicily and King Frederick III. The castle's strategic importance continued well into the 20th century when it defended the city's port. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the main tower, the cylindrical tower, and the Aragonese gate. The site also hosts concerts and events. Although partially demolished in the early 20th century due to port expansion and damaged during World War II, ongoing restoration efforts have brought to light the castle's historical and architectural significance.
