Walking

From the Livorno city center, the Fortezza Vecchia is easily accessible by foot. Head towards the Porto Mediceo, keeping the harbor on your right. The fortress is located at the edge of the harbor, near the Piazzale dei Marmi. The walk is approximately 15-20 minutes from Piazza Grande.
Public Transport

Several bus lines connect the Livorno Centrale train station to the Fortezza Vecchia. Take bus lines 30, 5, 8N, 8R, or 102 from the station to a stop near the port. From there, it's a short walk to the fortress. A single bus ticket costs around €1.50.
Taxi

Taxis are readily available in Livorno, including at the train station. A taxi ride from Livorno Centrale to the Fortezza Vecchia will take approximately 10 minutes and cost around €10-€15.

Countess Matilda of Tuscany erected a keep that would later be incorporated into the structure. In 1377, the city of Pisa built a fort called the Quadrature of the Pisans, which also became part of the fortress. The Medici family significantly expanded the fortress starting in 1519, with the design attributed to Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, a renowned military architect. Michelangelo may have also contributed to the fortress's design.The fortress is characterized by its asymmetrical structure and three bastions: Ampolletta facing the city, Canaviglia facing the port, and Capitana facing northeast.
