Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey in Mals, the nearest town to Watles. From Mals, head south on the SS40 road toward the village of Tschengls. After approximately 5 kilometers, turn right onto the road leading to Watles (follow the signs for 'Watles'). Continue on this road for about 10 kilometers until you reach the parking area at the base of Watles. The journey should take around 20 minutes depending on traffic. Note that parking may incur a small fee, so be prepared with cash.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, begin at Mals train station. Take the train to the closest station, which is either in Tschengls or a bus to the bus stop for Watles. Once in Tschengls, transfer to Bus Line 271 or 272, which will take you directly to the Watles stop. The bus ride will take approximately 30 minutes. Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as services may be limited, especially in off-peak seasons. There may be a small fee for the bus fare, typically around €3-€5.
Hiking
For the more adventurous, hiking is a viable option if you are in decent shape. Starting from Mals, you can take the hiking trail that leads to Watles. Follow the marked trail from Mals heading north, which will take you through scenic landscapes. The hike is approximately 12 kilometers and should take around 3-4 hours depending on your pace. Be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes and carry enough water and snacks.
