The Dome: A Historical Springhouse

The Dome, situated at the intersection of Creek Street and Dome Street in Montego Bay, is a historical structure that offers a glimpse into the city's past. Constructed in 1837, it was designed to protect a natural spring, Bay Creek, which served as a crucial source of fresh water for the local community.In the era before piped water systems, the Dome played a vital role in providing clean water to the residents of Montego Bay. The structure itself is noted for its unique hexagon-shaped, castle-like design, featuring white wooden louvres and a yellow brick tower. A caretaker, known as the "Keeper of the Door," was responsible for monitoring the site and collecting payments from those who drew water.Even after Montego Bay implemented a piped water system in 1893, many locals continued to prefer the water from the Dome, highlighting its enduring importance. According to local legend, the creek was discovered by two girls, one Spanish and one a slave, who were searching for crabs when they found a stone that revealed the bubbling spring. The townspeople were so grateful that they freed the slave girl and named the creek El Rio Camarones, or the River of Crabs. Today, the Dome stands as a historical monument, attracting visitors interested in learning about Montego Bay's rich history.
