Discover more about Udatsu Townscape

The Udatsu Townscape in Wakimachi offers a captivating journey back to the Edo period (1603-1868), when the town flourished as a center for indigo production and trade. The Yoshino River provided crucial water transportation, allowing Wakimachi to prosper as a hub for over a hundred indigo merchants. Today, the townscape is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, preserving the legacy of its wealthy past. The most distinctive feature of the townscape is the 'udatsu'. These are firewalls that protrude from the second story of the buildings, acting as a barrier against spreading fires in the densely packed merchant district. Constructed of plaster, the elaborate designs of the udatsu became symbols of wealth and status, with merchants competing to build the most impressive ones. The phrase 'udatsu ga agaranu' (cannot build 'udatsu') even became synonymous with not getting promoted or experiencing financial misfortune. Walking along Minamimachi-dori Street, the main thoroughfare stretching approximately 430 meters, visitors can admire the well-preserved townhouses with their classic tile roofs and white-walled storehouses. Other notable architectural details include 'mushikomado' (windows designed for light and fire protection) and 'shitomido'. Many of the buildings are still private residences, while others have been converted into shops, cafes, and restaurants. Visitors can explore the Yoshida Family Residence, the home of a wealthy indigo merchant, to get a feel for life in the Edo period. The Mima Tourism Exchange Center, housed in three renovated traditional houses, offers workshops, a tea house, and a rest area. At night, the townscape is illuminated by Andon-style lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere.
