    Local tips

Visit during autumn (late October to November) for spectacular maple foliage and the unique Momiji Cider experience, though expect higher crowds and elevated ropeway fares during this peak season.
Arrive early in the day to secure optimal seating with unobstructed views and to avoid midday crowds; the restaurant opens at 9:00 AM with lunch service from 10:30 AM.
Combine your meal with the hiking trails connecting the upper and lower stations; the western trail takes approximately one hour uphill and offers intimate gorge exploration.
Try the vegan olive curry or olive beef croquette burger to experience local Shodoshima ingredients; vegetarian options are available and well-prepared.
Check ropeway operating hours before visiting, as winter hours (December 21 to March 20) close at 4:30 PM, significantly earlier than other seasons.

    Location & Access

Kankakei Ropeway Restaurant Kaze sits at the summit station of Kankakei Gorge on Shodoshima Island, one of Japan's three most beautiful gorges. The restaurant is reached via the Kankakei Ropeway, a unique cable car system that ascends 317 meters in approximately 5 minutes, offering simultaneous views of sky, sea, and gorge—the only ropeway in Japan to provide this triple perspective. The journey itself is an attraction, rising from the lower station at 295 meters to the summit at 612 meters while traversing the dramatic volcanic landscape.

    Dining Experience

The restaurant specializes in international cuisine with a focus on local ingredients and island flavors. Signature dishes include olive beef croquette burgers and vegan-friendly olive curry made with slow-cooked beans, fresh vegetables, crispy roasted potatoes, eggplant, broccoli, and topped with stuffed olives. The menu reflects Shodoshima's renowned olive cultivation and agricultural heritage. Beverages include the unique Momiji Cider, a distinctive drink named after the vivid red maple leaves that characterize the gorge's autumn season. The restaurant operates from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily, with lunch service from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

    Scenic Setting & Seasonal Beauty

The restaurant's primary appeal lies in its unparalleled location offering 360-degree panoramic views of Shodoshima Island and the Seto Inland Sea. The gorge's scenery transforms dramatically with the seasons: spring brings vivid cherry blossoms, summer offers lush greenery, autumn features fiery maple foliage (the gorge's most celebrated season), and winter presents snow-dusted treetops. The observation decks adjacent to the restaurant provide ideal vantage points for experiencing these seasonal transformations.

    Geological Significance

Kankakei Gorge was formed through intense volcanic activity approximately 14 million years ago, followed by millennia of erosion and weathering. The resulting landscape features geologically significant rock formations including kigan kaiseki (strangely shaped stones) and iwa-no-katamari (hardened stones) created through volcanic activity, diastrophism, wind, and erosion. This dramatic geological backdrop enhances the dining experience with authentic natural beauty.

    Facilities & Services

The summit station complex includes the restaurant, a gift shop offering Shodoshima Island's signature products (somen noodles, olive oil, soy sauce), and observation platforms. The restaurant accommodates both breakfast and lunch service. No reservations are required. The facility is accessible year-round, with ropeway operations varying seasonally: March 21 to October 20 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, October 21 to November 30 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, December 1 to 20 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and December 21 to March 20 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

    Accessibility & Visitor Information

The ropeway departs every 6 to 12 minutes depending on season, ensuring minimal wait times. Round-trip fares vary seasonally, ranging from ¥2,160 to ¥2,700 for adults. Free parking accommodates large buses at the lower station. The site is easily reached from multiple island ports: approximately 15 minutes by bus from Kusakabe Port or 40 minutes from Tonosho Port. Hiking trails also connect the lower and upper stations for those preferring terrestrial exploration.
