Discover more about Okayama Castle

Okayama Castle, a striking landmark in Okayama, is steeped in history and offers visitors a captivating glimpse into Japan's feudal past. Originally constructed in 1597 by Ukita Hideie, a vassal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle's distinctive black exterior earned it the nickname "Crow Castle". This unique color distinguishes it from the more common white castles, like Himeji Castle. The castle played a pivotal role in various conflicts, including the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Unfortunately, much of the original structure was lost to Allied bombing during World War II. However, the main keep was reconstructed in 1966, and in 2022 underwent a major renovation to mark the Reiwa era. Today, the castle serves as a museum, showcasing exhibits about its history and development. Visitors can explore the castle's six-story keep, which houses exhibits related to the castle's history. One of the unique features is the scalene pentagonal shape of the first floor and the stone wall, a design choice influenced by the shape of Okayama hill where the castle was built. Inside the castle, guests can try on traditional kimonos, experience riding in a palanquin, and craft Bizen-yaki pottery. The top floor provides a 360-degree view of Okayama city and the nearby Korakuen Garden.
