Bandai Bridge: Niigata's Enduring Symbol

The Bandai Bridge (Bandai-bashi) is more than just a river crossing; it's a symbol of Niigata's history and resilience. Spanning the Shinano River, Japan's longest, the bridge connects the city's northern and southern districts. The current structure, completed in 1929, is the third bridge to occupy this vital location.The first Bandai Bridge, a wooden structure, was built in 1886 to facilitate trade and travel between Niigata and Nuttari. It was the longest bridge in Japan at the time, but was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1908. A second bridge, also made of wood, was quickly erected but succumbed to dilapidation. The third and current bridge was constructed using reinforced concrete and granite, a testament to modern engineering of the time. Its six arches provide both strength and aesthetic appeal.The Bandai Bridge is not only a vital transportation link, handling approximately 30,000 vehicles daily, but also a beloved landmark. It remarkably survived the 1964 Niigata earthquake, further solidifying its place in the hearts of the locals. Today, the bridge offers wide pedestrian walkways, perfect for a stroll with scenic views of the Shinano River. At night, the bridge is beautifully illuminated, enhancing Niigata's cityscape. For a unique perspective, visitors can take a ride on the Shinano River Water Shuttle, passing directly under the bridge.
