Discover more about Echigo-Tsumari Art Field

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is more than just an art exhibition; it's a regional revitalization project that began in 2000, aiming to breathe new life into the depopulating, aging agricultural area of Niigata Prefecture. Spanning 760 square kilometers, the Art Field encompasses six distinct areas: Tokamachi, Kawanishi, Nakasato, Matsushiro, Matsunoyama and Tsunan. With over 200 permanent artworks scattered throughout the landscape, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field encourages visitors to explore the region's natural beauty while encountering thought-provoking contemporary art. The art installations, created by both Japanese and international artists, are designed to harmonize with the environment, prompting reflection on the relationship between humans and nature. The Art Field's core concept revolves around the Japanese notion of 'satoyama,' the area between mountains and arable land, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, held every three years, further expands the Art Field with new installations and events, drawing art enthusiasts from around the globe. Key attractions include the Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum, the Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET), and the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel of Light.
