Getting there

Public Transport

From Tokyo, take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa Station. Transfer to the Joetsu Line or Hokuhoku Line to Muikamachi Station. From Muikamachi Station, take the Mt. Hakkai Ski Resort Line bus to the final stop. The ropeway station is a short walk from the bus stop. Bus fare is approximately ¥500.

Car

From the Muikamachi Interchange on the Kanetsu Expressway, it's approximately a 20-minute drive to Hakkaisan. Follow routes 253 and 17. Parking is available at the base of the ropeway. Parking is free on weekdays.

Overview

The Hakkaisan Ropeway, operated by Prince Hotels, is an aerial lift that ascends Mount Hakkai in Minamiuonuma, Niigata. Originally opened in 1983 as a gondola lift, it was refurbished into an aerial tramway in 2001. Primarily serving skiers at Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski Resort during winter, it also welcomes hikers and sightseers during the green seasons. The ropeway operates from late April to mid-November, offering a ride to the 4th station of Mt. Hakkai.From the summit station at 1,147 meters, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Joshinetsu mountains and, on clear days, even spot the Sea of Japan and Sado Island. The area is known for its stunning autumn foliage, drawing many to witness the mountainside ablaze with color.
