Discover more about Hoshitouge Terraced Rice Field

Hoshitouge Terraced Rice Field is located in Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture, an area known for its picturesque rice terraces. These terraced fields, called *tanada* in Japanese, are sloped fields comprising numerous small rice paddies that resemble large steps. Hoshitouge is one of the most visited spots in the area, offering magnificent views of the serene, rural surroundings. Said to have originated around the 6th or 7th century, terraced rice fields demonstrate an efficient method of farming on sloped land. Today, *tanada* make up approximately 8% of Japan's rice fields. The Hoshitouge Rice Terrace Preservation Association, a volunteer organization of villagers formed in 2013, maintains Hoshitouge's 200-plus paddies, continuing their ancestors' legacy. The Hoshitouge Rice Terraces offer different views throughout the year. In spring, the fields are filled with water, creating mirror-like reflections of the sky. During the summer, the rice plants grow, turning the landscape a vibrant green. In autumn, the rice plants turn golden before the harvest. In winter, snow blankets the terraces, creating a serene white landscape. The best times to visit are during the planting and harvesting seasons. From late June to early September, a sea of clouds may appear in the early morning hours. Visitors can enjoy the views from the designated observatory. The rice fields are private property, and visitors should not enter them.
