Discover more about Toyama Castle

Toyama Castle, also known as Azumi Castle, is a reconstructed Japanese castle located in Toyama City. Originally constructed in 1543 by the Jinbo clan, it served as a strategic fortification in the Etchū Province. Over the centuries, the castle was controlled by various powerful clans, including the Maeda clan, who used it as a base during the Edo period.During the Meiji Restoration, the castle keep was dismantled, and much of the structure fell into disrepair. In 1954, the current ferro-concrete keep was rebuilt, mirroring the design of Inuyama Castle. Today, the castle houses the Toyama Municipal Folk Museum, which showcases the history of Toyama and the Maeda family. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring artifacts, maps, and historical documents, and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the observation deck. The castle grounds have been transformed into Toyama Castle Park, a popular relaxation spot for locals and tourists. The park features a Japanese garden, spacious lawns, and a statue of a former local lord. In spring, the park becomes a prime location for cherry blossom viewing, with the nearby Matsukawa River adding to the scenic beauty. The Sato Memorial Art Museum, located within the park, displays the art collection of Sato Sukekuro, including tea ceremony utensils and local crafts.
