Getting There

  • Car

    If you are traveling by car, start from the center of Higo. Take Route 57 heading north towards Aso. Continue on Route 57 for approximately 50 kilometers. Follow the signs for Mount Aso (阿蘇) as you approach Aso city. Upon entering Aso, switch to Route 325, which leads directly to Takawara, Aso, Kumamoto 869-2223. There is parking available near the observation areas. Please note that parking may incur a fee, typically around 500 yen.

  • Public Transportation - Train

    Begin your journey by taking the JR Higo Railway from Higo Station to Kumamoto Station. From Kumamoto Station, transfer to the JR Hohi Line and take a train towards Aso Station. The train ride from Kumamoto to Aso takes approximately 1 hour. Once you arrive at Aso Station, you can either take a taxi directly to Mount Aso (around 20 minutes, costing approximately 3,000 yen) or take a local bus that operates to the Mount Aso area. Check the local bus schedule for timings.

  • Public Transportation - Bus

    From Kumamoto Station, you can also take an express bus to Aso. The bus departs frequently and the journey takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once you reach Aso, you can again take a local bus or taxi to Takawara, Aso, Kumamoto 869-2223, where Mount Aso is located. The bus fare is typically around 1,500 yen.
