Odori Park: Sapporo's Green Heart

Odori Park, stretching 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) east to west through the center of Sapporo, Hokkaido, is more than just a park; it's the city's vibrant heart. Conceived in 1871 as a firebreak to separate Sapporo's administrative and residential districts, it has transformed into a verdant oasis for locals and tourists alike. The name 'Odori' itself means 'large street' in Japanese, a nod to its original purpose.Throughout the year, Odori Park hosts a variety of events and festivals. The most famous is the Sapporo Snow Festival in February, drawing millions of visitors to marvel at the incredible snow and ice sculptures. In early summer, the Yosakoi Soran Festival fills the park with energetic dance performances. From mid-July to mid-August, the Sapporo Summer Festival features a massive beer garden, offering a taste of local and international brews. The Sapporo White Illumination in late November and December bathes the park in a magical glow.Beyond the events, Odori Park offers a tranquil escape with flower gardens, fountains, and sculptures. The park boasts 4,700 trees of 92 varieties, including Sapporo's official tree, the lilac. Notable features include the Black Slide Mantra by Isamu Noguchi, Sapporo TV Tower at the eastern end, and the Sapporo City Archive Museum at the western end. Visitors can also enjoy local specialties like grilled corn on the cob and buttery potatoes from the park's food stalls.
