Walking

From JR Otaru Station, the Otaru Canal is approximately a 10-minute walk. Exit the station and follow Chuo Dori Avenue straight towards the port. The canal will be on your right. There are no costs associated with walking to the canal.
Public Transport

From JR Otaru Station, take a local bus. The bus ride takes about 2 minutes to the Otaru Canal. Get off at the 'Chuo Dori' bus stop, which is close to the canal. The fare is approximately ¥140-¥200.
Taxi

The canal stretches approximately 1,140 meters in length and varies in width from 20 to 40 meters.With the development of modern docking facilities, the canal became obsolete. In the 1980s, a civic movement led to the preservation and partial restoration of the canal. The area was transformed into a charming tourist destination, with stone warehouses converted into restaurants, cafes, and galleries. Today, visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the canal's stone-paved promenade, especially enchanting at dusk when 63 gas lamps illuminate the area, creating a romantic atmosphere. Canal cruises offer a relaxing way to view Otaru's picturesque landscapes from the water, with commentary from the captain. The northern side of the canal, known as North Canal, retains its original 40-meter width and offers a quieter environment for photography.
