Discover more about Daiozaki Lighthouse

Daiozaki Lighthouse stands as a proud sentinel on the southeastern coast of the Shima Peninsula in Mie Prefecture. Since its establishment in 1927, the lighthouse has been a vital aid to navigation, safeguarding vessels navigating the meeting point of the Kumano-nada and Enshu-nada currents. The area was once feared as a dangerous spot for maritime navigation, which led to the construction of the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is a beautiful white octagonal concrete tower, standing approximately 22.5 meters tall. The light, positioned about 45 meters above sea level, has a visible range of approximately 33 kilometers. Visitors can climb the 99 steps of the spiral staircase inside the lighthouse to reach the observation deck. From the top, breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the coastline of the Shima Peninsula, and nearby islands unfold. On a clear day, you can spot other lighthouses, such as Anorisaki and Mugisaki. Daio Town, where the lighthouse is located, is known as a 'town of painters'. The dramatic coastline, the white lighthouse against the blue sea, and the quaint fishing town have attracted artists since the Meiji era. The town retains an artistic atmosphere, with galleries and studios dotted around. Visitors can explore the 'Painter's Path,' a cobblestone slope that has inspired many artists. In 1998, Daiozaki Lighthouse was selected as one of the '50 Best Lighthouses in Japan'. In 2010, the Daiozaki Lighthouse Exhibition Room was added, offering insights into the lighthouse's history and its role in maritime safety.
