Discover more about Nishi Chaya District

The Nishi Chaya District (西茶屋街, Nishi Chayagai) provides a captivating glimpse into Kanazawa's history as a prominent entertainment center. Founded in 1820, this district, along with Higashi Chaya, served as a place for geiko (the local term for geisha) to entertain wealthy merchants and lords with music, dance, and games. Today, Nishi Chaya is smaller and quieter compared to the Higashi Chaya District, offering a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. The main street is lined with beautifully preserved, two-story wooden chaya buildings, characterized by their latticework windows. While some buildings have been transformed into charming sweet shops and cafes, a few still operate as exclusive geiko parlors, maintaining the traditions of the past. In the evening, the enchanting sound of the shamisen may drift through the air, enhancing the district's historical ambiance. Visitors can explore the Nishi Chaya Shiryokan Museum, housed in a former teahouse, to learn about the district's history and view exhibits related to the renowned author Seijiro Shimada, who was raised here. The museum also recreates the interior of a luxurious teahouse, complete with gold folding screens and lacquered ornaments.
